Why should your next dining table be solid wood?

Nov 11, 2023

Buying a dining table can be a daunting task, and we understand why. Sometimes you may be tempted to buy a cheaper dining table within your budget, or you may splurge on a designer piece because there is no doubt that at this price, it will be a worthwhile investment! Maybe not. Often, you may realize that these decisions may not be the right ones in the long run. This begs the question: So what makes a good dining table choice?

A solid wood dining table is a great investment for homeowners. Yes, they may not be the most affordable option, but they're not too expensive either (if you find the right retailer). Additionally, there are many benefits to purchasing a solid wood dining table.

Cost friendly (in the long run)
think about it:

A cheaper dining table will probably cost you around $500. It would be great if it lasted a few years. However, the annual investment is approximately $250. Additionally, if you hope to sell these tables in the future, they may not fetch much.

On the other hand, a premium laminate or wood veneer dining table can cost three times as much. Despite the higher price, it would be quite a feat for them to last a long time, as they may not be able to cope with the daily chores of the dinner table.

With a solid wood dining table, while the upfront cost is expensive (about $2,000 to $3,000), you get a table that will last for decades and sell for a good price. Solid wood dining tables can also be refurbished and given a new look. This is unlike other materials that cannot be refurbished. Once damaged, such as deep scratches, you will have to replace the dining table or live with the cosmetic blemishes.

This is a sustainable choice
Having a wooden table is also sustainable. You'll have something that will last a long time and can be refurbished. This means there’s less material to deal with in the long run than buying a brand new table.

Wooden tables can also be repurposed. If you feel that your old wooden dining table has reached the end of its useful life, you can always transform it into stools, a serving board, or anything else you need. This way you can reuse natural resources sustainably.

It doesn't need to be expensive (if you find the right retailer)
Contrary to popular belief, the price of solid wood dining tables has dropped dramatically as it has become more popular. Most solid wood dining tables are cut and prepped in cost-effective manufacturing countries such as China, Vietnam, and Indonesia. In addition to this, it is also important to find the right retailer to get the most bang for your buck. Making solid wood furniture is not easy. We know this because we are furniture manufacturers and can understand the effort that goes into it.

When looking for a solid wood dining table, you may come across retailers who sell solid wood dining tables at exorbitant "designer" prices but with little understanding of the manufacturing process and the properties of the wood.

You may also come across retailers who sell solid wood tables at deep discounts, but they don't fully understand the kind of material they're selling. Although this kind of table is solid wood, it can cause many problems downstream. For example, in order to prevent warping, the wood must be fully dried during processing, but some furniture manufacturers save money because this requires a lot of time and space.
