What is Coffee Table

A coffee table is a low table designed to be placed in a sitting area for convenient support of beverages, remote controls, magazines, books (especially large, illustrated coffee table books), decorative objects, and other small items. Most coffee tables are made of wood (though faux wood tables are increasingly common) or glass and metal, typically stainless steel or aluminum, and may incorporate cabinets or drawers.

Benefits of Coffee Table

Durable
Wood is a natural material, and as such it's inherently durable. You can expect your wood coffee table to last for decades - if not longer - without any maintenance beyond cleaning it regularly. It won't scratch or dent easily, even if you have kids or pets around the house who love to play with things.
Wood is also less likely to warp than other materials like metal or glass might over time; this means that your table will stay level while still being able to withstand changes in temperature without cracking under pressure from expansion/contraction cycles caused by seasonal changes in humidity levels outside!

Low maintenance
Wood is a natural material and therefore does not need to be waxed or treated like many other materials. If you have a wood coffee table, you can simply dust it off with a cloth and wipe it down with soap and water if needed.

Versatile
A wood coffee table can be used as a coffee table, dining table and even a desk. It can create a modern or rustic look depending on the style of your home. You can use it in any room of your house, from the living room to the bedroom and even in the bathroom!

Vogue
Wood coffee tables are in fashion. They can be used in any room, and they're timeless. You can choose from a variety of woods that will fit your home decor, including rubberwood, oak, cherry and walnut.

Affordable
The first benefit of a wood coffee table is its affordability. For people who are on a budget, this is an excellent choice. You can find one that fits your taste and style, while also being within your means. You don't have to spend hundreds of dollars on something that will only be used for holding drinks and snacks during parties or game night with friends.

Material of Coffee Table

Marble coffee tables
Marble coffee tables are a timeless addition to any living space. Their unique, natural designs in the stone ensure that each table is practical yet also acts as a piece of art and centrepiece in both modern and traditional homes. Their sturdy nature means they're built to last, and with a little care, they retain their beauty for years to come.

Concrete coffee tables
Concrete coffee tables are a bold choice, synonymous with strength and modernity. Unlike other materials, concrete brings an industrial flair, making these tables both functional and a statement piece. Concrete's raw, textured finish showcases its authenticity, often contrasted beautifully against softer indoor furnishings. The material can also help regulate room temperature staying cool in the heat. Plus, with age, they develop a rich patina that adds character to the table and the overall space.

Hardwood coffee tables
Hardwood coffee tables, regardless of the specific tree type, are a testament to nature's artistry. The intricate grain patterns and hues inherent in hardwoods bring a unique design to each table. These tables reveal a mature appearance as they age, adding depth to their character.
Each table's design is distinct, marked by its specific grain and texture nuances that celebrate the authenticity of natural wood. Their solid construction promises longevity, making these tables not just decorative centrepieces but also enduring elements of a room's design.

Glass coffee tables
Glass (or glass topped) coffee tables, with their sleek transparency, give rooms a spacious feel. This clarity allows them to make areas look more open, avoiding the heaviness that some tables can introduce. Often crafted from tempered glass, these tables combine style with longevity and are straightforward to clean. Their versatile design complements a range of interior themes.
Features like bevelled edges add to their safety, making them suitable for many homes. Their clear surface is perfect for showcasing beautiful floorings or rugs below, and by reflecting light, they brighten up a room, giving it an airy feeling.

Steel coffee tables
Steel coffee tables are grounded in stability and practical purpose while fitting seamlessly into modern settings. Composed of carbon and iron, steel is recognised for its high tensile strength, ensuring these tables withstand scratches and impacts with ease. Their sleek metallic finish is not only contemporary but also resistant to stains and simple to clean with common household products. The inherent density of steel gives these tables stability, even in bustling environments.
Design-wise, steel's versatility allows it to pair effectively with various materials, like the transparency of glass or the warmth of wood. Furthermore, with steel being one of the most recycled materials globally, choosing a steel table is a nod to sustainable living.

Types of Coffee Table

Round coffee tables
Round coffee tables are practical for various living spaces. Their edge-free design can be safer, reducing the risk of injury from sharp corners, especially in homes with children. Additionally, their shape allows for easy access from any direction, which can benefit rooms with non-uniform seating arrangements. A round table can also offer a visual contrast to the common angular lines of room furniture, contributing to a balanced room design. They complement various furniture styles, from sleek modern pieces to traditional designs.

Barrel coffee tables
Modern coffee tables such as Barrel style options captivate with their unique form that mirrors a classic barrel shape. They boast a sturdy structure, with many made from timber, reminiscent of authentic barrels. However, modern iterations also incorporate materials like brass. Their curved design fits seamlessly in diverse seating layouts, and a bonus is the storage option often found inside the table. True to their origin, these coffee tables frequently display distinct markings, giving each piece its own character and charm.

Oval coffee tables
Oval coffee tables, characterised by their elongated curves, offer a refreshing contrast to the typical rectangular or square tables. The rounded design is not only accommodating in various settings, particularly in spaces with constraints, but it also removes the risks associated with sharp corners.
The oval shape promotes a natural flow within room layouts, harmonising with both linear and curved furniture items. This adaptability ensures they're a popular addition for those aiming to optimise space in their living areas.

Square coffee tables
Square coffee tables present a balanced and symmetrical design suitable for various spaces. Their equal proportions offer a generous surface, ideal for displaying decor or holding daily essentials. The four equal sides introduce order and structure in a room, often anchoring the seating arrangement.
Their straightforward geometry facilitates easy alignment with other furniture pieces. Many square coffee tables also feature practical storage options like shelves or drawers. Choosing a square coffee table ensures a versatile piece that can adapt to and enhance multiple interior styles.

Rectangular coffee tables
Rectangular coffee tables feature an elongated surface, making them ideal for longer sofas or expansive seating areas. Their form serves as a unifying element, connecting different furniture pieces and defining seating zones. The extended shape provides ample space for various items, from decorative pieces to everyday essentials. The linear design of these tables aids in maintaining organised displays and arrangements.
Often a rectangular coffee table will also incorporate added storage solutions, such as shelves or drawers, making these tables particularly good choices for smaller spaces.

Mushroom coffee tables
Mushroom coffee tables are as the name implies modelled after the shape of mushrooms. The typical tabletop has a 'mushroom head' or rounded appearance and often comes in materials such as glass, wood, or marble, among others. The tabletop is supported by a central base or stem, usually constructed from wood.
The mushroom-inspired form gives these tables a unique look and style from conventional coffee tables, and an interesting choice for homeowners.

Outdoor coffee tables
Outdoor coffee tables are specially designed to endure the elements whilst enhancing outdoor areas. Constructed from hard-wearing materials such as teak, metal, resin, or rattan, they stand up to the challenges of changing weather conditions. Their build often incorporates features for rainwater drainage and resistance to UV rays. The design of outdoor coffee tables is typically robust, emphasising tenacity and sturdiness.
Available in a range of finishes and styles, they complement the aesthetics of patios, terraces, or garden settings. Beyond their functional use, these tables act as focal points for gatherings, barbecues, or peaceful outdoor moments.

Tray coffee tables
Tray coffee tables are designed with raised edges, drawing inspiration from traditional trays. This design not only adds to the visual appeal but also significantly reduces the likelihood of spills or items being accidentally pushed off. Many of these tables feature a detachable tray top, allowing for easy transport of items or versatile room styling.
The choice of materials, such as wood, metal, and glass, ensures durability while allowing homeowners to select a table that aligns with their interior décor, whether it be a sleek modern space or a room with classic details and features.

Two-tiered coffee tables
Two-tiered coffee tables feature both an upper and lower surface, doubling the available space of standard tables. This layered design allows users to organise items more efficiently, such as storing reading materials on the lower shelf while reserving the top for beverages or snacks. The inclusion of an additional level also introduces architectural interest, offering a dynamic alternative to traditional flat-surfaced tables. Such tables are especially favoured in homes where space efficiency is key or where a distinctive table design is favoured.

How Do I Choose A Coffee Table Size?

01

Coffee Table Height

A standard coffee table is usually between 16 and 18 inches high, but the perfect height will come down to the size of your surrounding furniture. For example, a coffee table should typically be either the same height as your sofa seat cushions, or a maximum of 2 inches lower, in order to allow for easy access to the coffee table surface. We'd recommend avoiding coffee tables that are higher than your sofa seat, as this is less comfortable and will make the room feel out of proportion.

02

Coffee Table Width

The typical width for a standard coffee table is around 47 inches, but they can vary anywhere between 40 inches to 86 inches depending on the scale you're looking for. Just as with height, the width of your coffee table should be determined by your sofa. One that is the same size or larger than your sofa will look too big, and will make your sitting room appear smaller. To keep the proportions in check, we recommend seeking a style that is two-thirds the length of your sofa. This will help your living space feel more balanced.

03

Coffee Table Depth

Coffee table depths can range from around 18 inches to 32 inches. However, if you've already read up on coffee table height and width, you'll be unsurprised to hear that the perfect depth is also largely determined by the rest of the furniture in your sitting room. In this instance, it all hangs on placement. You'll want to leave 12–18 inches of space between your coffee table and your sofa, and around 30 inches of space between your other pieces of furniture, such as your TV stand, to allow for comfortable foot traffic. To calculate the perfect depth, measure the distance from your sofa to your TV stand (or another large piece of furniture) and then subtract 48 inches (which is 18 + 30, a.k.a. the distance you want to keep between your sofa and your coffee table, plus the distance between your coffee table and TV stand).

How to Care for a Wooden Coffee Table

Use a Soft Cloth to Dust It Weekly
You want to make sure that you're careful when dusting your table. A soft cloth works well for this purpose, but don't use a wet cloth or one with a rough surface (like an old T-shirt). You also shouldn't use a vacuum cleaner on your coffee table; this can cause scratches and damage to the wooden surface.

Apply a Furniture Polish Once in a Month
To apply a furniture polish, you will need to:
● Clean the surface of your wooden coffee table with a damp cloth. This helps to remove any dirt or dust that may have accumulated on the surface of your table in between cleanings.
● Pour some furniture polish into a small bowl and dip a soft cloth into it, absorbing as much liquid from the bowl as possible.
● Rub the furniture polish onto your coffee table in small circles until all parts are covered evenly.
● Let sit for about 15 minutes, so that the wood can soak up this natural oil and then wipe away any excess with a dry towel.

Don't Put Hot Items Directly on the Wooden Coffee Table
When you use your coffee table as a surface for hot items, the heat can damage the wood and cause it to crack. Instead, place hot items on a trivet or coaster—essentially a small plate designed to protect hard surfaces from heat.
You can also protect your wooden coffee table from scratches by using coasters under plates and cups. This will prevent accidental scratches from being made on the top of your beautiful piece of furniture. Finally, don't expose your wooden coffee table to moisture! The wood is porous and will absorb any liquid that comes into contact with it (unless you have sealed it). If water gets into the pores of the wood over time, this can cause it to rot or warp—so be sure not to put drinks directly onto the surface of your table!

Avoid Using Harsh Chemical Cleaning Products
As with any piece of furniture, it's important to use a soft cloth to dust the wooden coffee table. You can also apply furniture polish once in a while for extra protection.
Avoid using harsh chemical cleaning products. The wood may be fine if you're just using a microfiber cloth and your fingertips, but if you want something stronger for that pristine shine, consider using only non-toxic cleaners that are pH balanced for wood surfaces.
If you're looking for a more natural option, try using lemon juice and salt. It's a great natural cleaner that works wonders on wooden surfaces.

Asked Questions

Q: What to consider for a coffee table?

A: The size of your coffee table needs to fit in proportion to the other furniture in the room, especially the couch or sectional that it will reside in front of. The look and style of the table need to pair well with the style of furniture also, whether it be contemporary, modern, etc.

Q: What is the rule of thumb for a coffee table?

A: Coffee Table to Sofa Size Ratio. The coffee table should be about ½ to ⅔ the size of the sofa, at least visually. It's almost impossible to measure, but “a little more than half the size” is a good rule of thumb when shopping for a center table.

Q: What is the rule for coffee table from couch?

A: HRULE: 16″ to 18” is the ideal distance between the sofa and coffee table. While every room is sized differently you don't want to have your coffee table so far from the sofa that you can't reach your drink or put your feet up after a long day (depending on your house rules, of course).

Q: How many things should be on a coffee table?

A: We recommend picking between 4-6 pieces. For example, 1 vase, 2 coffee table books, 1 object and greenery. Too many items can look cluttered and leave no room for actual use of the coffee table. Play with varying sizes and heights to create depth and dimension, this adds interest.

Q: Should coffee table be higher or lower than couch?

A: Most design professionals will tell you that they generally plan for a table to be very slightly lower than your sofa. By rule of thumb, this means that whatever you choose shouldn't be more than 2,5 - 5 cm shorter than your living room ensemble and will average a height of between 40 and 46 cm.

Q: Where should a coffee table be placed?

A: In front of the sofa. It's the most popular position. ...
Near the fireplace. Such a placement is also able to create a welcoming seating arrangement. ...
In front of a TV set. It's a functional placement. ...
Against the wall. ...
The very center of the room.

Q: How tall should a coffee table be compared to couch?

A: A good guideline is to measure to the top of your sofa cushions, and choose a coffee table with a height that is approximately the same as that measurement, aiming for no more than 2″ lower.

Q: How big should your coffee table be compared to your couch?

A: Too little space and it will feel crowded. Ideally, a coffee table should be about two-thirds the length of your sofa. It should never be larger than the sofa, or the room may appear unbalanced. You also don't want to go smaller than half the sofa's length, or the table will feel out-of-place.

Q: What is the ideal distance between couch and coffee table?

A: The ideal distance between your coffee table and sofa should be approximately 18 inches (45 cm) to 24 inches (60 cm). This distance strikes a perfect balance between accessibility and comfort.

Q: Does the coffee table have to match the couch?

A: The next thing to keep in mind is, of course, style! In our projects, we typically opt for a comfortable and casual style that still feels refined. Your coffee table should coordinate with your sofa but not match, and the general design styles should feel aligned.

Q: Should the drawers of a coffee table face the sofa?

A: There's no rule on whether coffee table drawers should face the sofa - it's entirely up to you. If you're using yours to store everyday items, making sure the drawers face the sofa makes more sense.

Q: Does a coffee table need to be centered?

A: Short answer, no, a coffee table does not have to be centered in front of the sofa. While centering the coffee table is a common approach in interior design, it's not a strict rule.

Q: What not to put on a coffee table?

A: Items displayed on your coffee table that are too small, such as petite tea lights on a larger table, can look out of place, whereas items that are too large will leave little room for any negative space.

Q: What is the golden ratio for coffee tables?

A: Sofas should occupy around 60% of the space, while coffee tables should take up around 40%.

Q: Should TV stand and coffee table match?

A: No, your coffee table and TV stand do not necessarily need to match. While coordinating these two furniture pieces can create a cohesive look in your living room, mixing and matching styles can also result in an interesting and eclectic design.

Q: Why are modern coffee tables so low?

A: In many cases, the lower the table, the smaller they are in size, allowing them to fit into compact rooms without overdominating your other furniture. Placing short coffee tables in front of sofas and chairs will provide a practical storage surface without interrupting your line of sight.

Q: How to position coffee table in living room?

A: When arranging your living room, aim to position your coffee table within approximately 14 inches of the sofa and try to work out what size of coffee table will work from there. This distance is close enough to reach for your cup of tea or magazine without encroaching on leg space.

Q: What else can I use a coffee table for?

A: Swap books for tabletop objects, puzzles for candles and flowers—or just mix it all together and let your coffee table serve as a decorative catchall displaying your current obsessions.

Q: What height should a coffee table be sitting on the floor?

A: Choose a coffee table height between 16 and 18 inches. A coffee table should measure 16 to 18 inches from the floor to the tabletop. At this height, an average-size adult seated in front of the table can set an object on it without bending his back or straining his arms to reach the surface.

Q: What does a coffee table do for a room?

A: A coffee table is a small table that is intended to be put in a sitting area and used for holding items like magazines, books, remote controls and ornaments, as well as place to to put your drinks when you're sitting in the living room.
